The Neurodiverse Advisory Council: By Participants, For Participants

October 6, 2024 Advocacy Council Neurodiverse Tech Kids Unlimited

At Tech Kids Unlimited, the Neurodiverse Advisory Council (NAC) is where big ideas meet bold action. What makes this council so special? It’s powered by TKU high school, college students and alumni—all neurodiverse, all experts by experience, and all paid for their valuable insights. The council is led by TKU staff and it meets monthly on Friday evenings, where these changemakers are sharpening their leadership, advocacy skills and helping shape TKU’s future.

Their latest discussions? Tackling real-life challenges such as balancing personal needs with supporting friends, practicing clear and compassionate communication, and making TKU even more inclusive. A standout moment in last month’s meeting was when guest speaker A., an autistic grad student, shared his self-advocacy journey. His message? Embrace your identity, own your strengths, and never hold back your voice.

NAC isn’t just talking—they’re doing. They masterminded the games for the October Mystery Masquerade Tech Social, creating a fun scavenger hunt mystery. They’ve explored time management hacks like energy trackers and the Pomodoro method for focus and brainstormed ways to level up teacher training with clearer communication and assistive tech. They’re also crafting workshops on college transitions, ensuring TKU stays cutting-edge and community-focused. By centering participant voices, TKU is proving that inclusion isn’t just a value; it’s a game-changer.
